Hi, Jim, Tim, RickE, Peter and everybody else.
I guess I'm lurking. I check the newsgroup every day, but rarely come
across a thread to which I can respond.
I'm retired on Social Security Disability and scraping by on that
fixed income. About a year ago, after my mother passed away, my
sister and I sold the family house. The house I've lived in on and
off for 55 years.
I moved to a 1 bedroom apartment and brought some of my computer
equipment. "Some" is 25 boxes filled with stuff and 5 computers. I
went a different route than I had previously and bought a new HP using
Windows XP. It's wonderful to be able to use current software and
hardware. Its also good to delegate responsibility to someone else,
even if they are in India or New Delhi. Gotta say, Micro$oft
technical support is better than other companies - Intuit (Quicken),
Novastor (backup software), Zones (where I bought the computer).
Actually, HP is good, also, and their tech support is in Canada. I
replaced the HP optical mouse with inside wheel and USB connector with
a plain black IBM mouse with PS/2 connector. I might replace the
keyboard, too.
I might have room to set up one more computer. I'm leaning towards
the 8580-071 which I could use for text and spreadsheets, but the 9595-
Y, PC 750 and PC300GL are in the running. I guess that leaves the
9577-K (D?)NG. These computers and parts are up for grabs.
I've found a very nice service for giving things away. Its like ePay
but everything has to be free. It helps pack rats like me get rid of
things. Someone is coming here in a few minutes to pick up an excess
cat carrier. I have 6 other ones, and only 3 cats.
As I posted before, I now own a Lotus Elise. It takes driving to a
new level. http://www.lotuscars.com/elise_190.html I spend time with
that newsgroup instead of comp.sys.ibm.ps2.hardware.
My other toy is a Nikon digital camera. I still have film cameras but
digital is intriguing.
Please note that I have a new e-mail address: kaliuzhkin <at> verizon
<dot> net zh instead of sh, verizon instead of att.
So, I'll be thinking of you as I read the posts. |

*DON'T* give away the 32MB ECC SIMM's with the 9595!! (Except to
someone who understands their unique value and won't ever let them go
to scrap.)

Do a search for "Freecycle" if you're interested.

I won't go into the details of my finances, except to say I could
afford it, and I could "go for it." No qualms or misgivings.

course, most of the pleasure is mine, not people who see it. |

I'm still hanging out (heck, I was one of the top five or so posters
last month with a whopping 7 posts or so) - just checking in with a
different perspective these days.
As noted previously, I've sort of lost interest in computers. Getting
into bicycles. I ride 50 miles a day - every weekday - back and forth
to work. I have lost like 40+ pounds since last fall, can eat
anything I want whenever I want, am in the best shape I've been this
millennium, good vital stats, feel absolutely fabulous, etc., etc.
It started innocently enough: I bought a 22 year old road bike and
rode it occasionally. Then last summer the kids started spending more
time riding their bikes - really enjoying it - so I have upgraded some
of their Dept Store bikes with good quality (used) bikes. Now I was
needing some tools and a workstand. I lucked into this guy's shop
where he was purging the bike stuff, and got professional quality
tools and workstand plus tons of parts and stuff. At this point I
have four bikes:
http://www.daisyheadmayzie.net/~dan/bikes.jpeg (~300kB)
(note the usual constraints on daisyheadmayzie.net uptime - typically
goes down ~8 hrs daily)
.... The black Trek on the bottom is my daily driver. It's a 1986
model 400 Elance (Sport/Touring). It's one of the last hand-I love
this machine more and more every day. It is *so* good to me :-)
The black Miyata on top is the 1989 model 914 that I bragged of here
before. I rode it to work about a week ago and was having a blast and
making record time without even trying... when something cut clean
through the ~$50 rear tire on the last mile coming home. I fixed the
hole with a folded up granola bar wrapper to get home.
The beautiful blue mountain bike on top is my 1987 Specialized
Stumpjumper. I got this from the guy with the tools. It's in
practically mint condition - truly a collectors item - fun to ride,
too :-)
The green mountain bike on the bottom is a Nishiki Pueblo (~1991) -
sort of converted into a "City Bike" by the previous owner's local
bike shop. He never rode it, so it's in very good condition. I got
it cheap, although it had a lousy seatpost - which wrecked the seat -
so I spent ~$18 on a seatpost and have a ~$16 saddle coming in the
mail. This is my "ride to the store and lean it against a flower pot"
and "jump on and haul ass to the fire station" bike.
Around the first of each month I look forward to payday when (maybe) I
can place an order with Bike Nashbar http://www.nashbar.com/
Aside from that, I did spend a large part of a couple days on PS/2
stuff a week or so ago (trying to build up a spare 95 to sell on
ebay), and a while back I built a PS/2 8556 OS/2 IBM Wireless LAN <->
ethernet router substantially from scratch. Still got some of the MAD-
PS/2-Skillz.
The lab is still essentially intact, although I have to move a couple
of bikes if I want to get all the way in there.
And I have so many friends here |

720, 500 or ncr 3434's but they're patiently waiting'
vacation? what's that? i got today off but back at it monday night for more
fun and games, i'm 55 now and work with a 23 year old kid who thinks he

Wow... I envy that. I'd like to be able to bike/walk to work but 60
miles is a bit out of my range! ;-) My rider is a Lotus Excelle (27"
frame - it gets looks) I bought new back in '87.
On topic, tho... lurking and lots of it.
About every 6 months or so I do a bit more PS/2-ing, catch up on the
newsgroup.
One of the few groups where little changes yet it's still interesting.

I'm still here. Where else would I go?
I've just been too busy to do much MAD stuff. (Busy at work, I come home
shattered and just want to doze in a chair and read a bit.) The pressure
will ease off in a couple of weeks, we're real close to ship date now.

Joining in for the chorus... I have been witnessing the Euro 2008 and still
trying to recover from the drama or trauma, I don't know what to call it
....;) These were truly memorable weeks with a different, instantly better
spirit in this host city. Vienna took part with some 5-6 national teams in
the competition, one team for each large slice of the immigrant or guest
population.

Got it going after the usual trials and trebulations, but it has been
standing here looking rather disheveled with all the panels off for more
than three months now.
Never got round to testing (sorry Ünal..).

No problem, Jelte. This is absolutely no problem. There will be other
opportunities to test, so I hope. |

Just being too busy to hack at the moment, sitting here and reading the stuff
though. I still have a bunch of stuff here and even a few new ones. The worst
part is that I have absolutely no time for the computers at the moment.
Imagine, things like two neat Japan-only IBM tablets on my desk and they have
been wrapped up for over a year. I bought them from Zeer Rangsit in .th last
July and "smuggled" them to .fi. They are still in the protective cardboard
that I packed them in before the flight...
Don't worry, the bits do not go out of my blood very easily. Lets say they are
hibernating at the moment, all the hacking I have time for is strictly
utilitarian right now but things will change very soon.
