I am having troubles with the Plextor PlexWriter PX-412C (caddy), Mod. 95
with Nero 5 from the Plextor CD. It is the first device on the Spock bus,
the second device is the Plextor CD-ROM PX-40TS which terminates the bus and
has the higher SCSI ID.

On burning simulation with Nero, the message is "SCSI/IDE command failed".
On disk copy simulation with the PlexTools (it can only copy disks), the
messages are more explicit, like "Program area empty" and "Drive reset". I
have tested two PX-412C CD-Writers, with different firmware versions - 1.03
and the other with the latest 1.07.

The system event log is clean regarding the Plextor drives, so I just wonder
what the problem could be. The HD is on the Corvette bus, the Plextors are
on the Spock bus. I had earlier the Yamaha 4416S joined by a another 12x
Plextor CDROM on the Spock bus and the combo worked fine with CeQuadrat's
software.

I have the possibility to let Spock206 intercept the offending messages, or
perhaps I should first try the LED panel version. Until then, have we had
any similar PlexWriter related experiences?

I don't think a real reason has ever been found for this. Some people
(myself included) had no problems burning discs immediately from an
IBM MCA SCSI controller. Others have had partial success after
installing Force ASPI. And yet others have found they couldn't burn
CDs at all from an IBM MCA SCSI adapter.

Since I saw all three scenarios, I looked at what was changing between
each setup. Software setup was pretty much the same on all of the
systems I ever tried to burn discs with. The only difference I could
find was the revision level of the Spock adapter's microcode. The
later adapters worked perfectly or much better than earlier ones, at
least in my experiments. The same was true of the uncached SCSI/A...I
never got an early one to work at all, where the later ones (the
"short card") worked fine.

I also found that CD burning would work without question from the NCR
Dual SIOP (53C710 based) and Adaptec AHA-1640 on any of the machines.
The NCR 53C94 planar SCSI on the NCR 3350 also worked perfectly,
despite being rather limited by its PIO interface.

Burning with Yamaha and Spock succeeded in my setup but then we have to take
into account the software, in particular, the SCSI communication with the
device. Perhaps both Nero and PlexTools (Plextor's tool suite) employ a
similar method. PlextTools was trying to write to a position after the 99th
minute, but this PX-412C drive can count only to the 89th minute. I would
suspect that the SCSI Inquiry or Read Capacity command fails, in case the
software requests the capacity of the disk and fails to obtain the correct
figure. I am not excluding the case where both drives I tried are defective,
this is not improbable.

I have not had yet time to install the LED panel Spock206 to trace the
commands, I hope for clues after I have done so. My initial tests were with
a 700 MB blank disk, manufactured by Acer, so PlexTools.

A word to the Read Capacity SCSI command: the driver translates it to the
IBM SCB format to let the adapter adjust for the size of the eventual
reference partition regardless of the type of the addressed SCSI device.

Perhaps I should try to issue Read Capacity directly to the device, I have
not tested this case with Spock206.
