Hi guys,

I have a fairly heavy box marked Computer Upgrade Corporation that has
an Optical Disk reader/writer of some sort in it. On the back it says
Pioneer DD-S5001 Optical Disk Subsystem. It has a couple of
connectors on it that I'd say look like SCSI connectors, but I don't
see any way to change the drive ID, so I'm not sure. Anyone have a
clue what this is, and what I can do with it?

A little bit of background on the box: I received it from a friend of
mine who has worked in the IT business for quite some time. He was
cleaning out his basement, and I got this box, along with 10 disks (11
if you count the one that was in the drive =]), a bunch of 1GB hard
drives, about 10 486 workstations, and ~2,510 (approximately; a more
accurate count reads about 20 =]) 486 DX4 Overdrive 100Mhz chips. At
that time, both of us figured that it must be related to the machines
he gave me; thus making it some sort of parallel device. Well, I
found out that the connector on it is a bit wider than a parallel
cable, so I just left it on my shelf and figured that someday I'd find
out what it was. Hence my guess that it's SCSI or some sort of
proprietary interface. I guess the moral of this part is that neither
I nor the guy I got this from know what it is =]

Thanks!

It's a magneto optical worm drive, a 5.25" FH external optical 650mb
drive, basically a data drive predating CDrom. Last one I saw had a
proprietar controller card similar to the old cdroms that had non-IDE
and non-SCSI controllers.
