Can someone please tell me what the standard screw size is that fits Cd Roms
and DVD players to the computer cages. I need to order a box of them because
I never seem to be able to find four !

Thanks

Also, what is the standard screw size made for harddrive installation.

4-40 x whatever length you need, typically about 3/16" inch,
but 1/4" is more useful, being longer but not necessarily
too long.

3-32, and again it depends on the installation, 1/4" is a
nise size but shorter is standard.

You could start with the claims of an Ebay seller, and then examine the
screws you have currently used on your drives, and see if the description
matches. For hard drives, the screws cannot be too long, as they'll press
against the base.

http://stores.ebay.com/B-D-Hardware-House_Computer-Hardware_Screws-Fasteners_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ14041853QQftidZ2QQtZkm

For a hard drive at least, you can get info from a hard drive tech manual.
See PDF page 50 and Figure 6. Mentions 6-32 screws with max 0.15" long
threaded section.

http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/disc/manuals/desktop/Barracuda%207200.10/100402371j.pdf

For an example CD drive, I found this. Page2 mentions an M3 screw (metric)
with thread length 3mm +/- 0.5mm with respect to the casing of the drive.
You'd want a slightly longer screw, to take into account the thickness of
the slider that comes with the computer case.

http://sdd.toshiba.com/techdocs/CD-RWDVD(SD-R1XX2)QuickStartGuide-RevC.pdf

Another source of data - this Startech PC screw kit, lists inventory.

http://www.startech.com/item-specs/PCSCREWKIT-Assortment-of-screws-nuts-and-standoffs.aspx

"Screw 6-32 x .25 Inches Used in PC case cover and I/O plates
Screw 6-32 x .15 Inches Used to install hard drives
Screw M3 x .25 Inches Used to install floppy drive, CD-ROM drive and motherboard"

I never use all four screws for anything. You only need 2 usually even
for the power supply. Therefore I always have plenty on hand.

Seems a bit wacko, to have the screws but choose not to use
them so you can have extra screws you aren't going to use.
Retail drives come with screws, cases normally come with
screws. The local computer shops are probably throwing away
a few thousand screws a year or have chucked them into a big
box and might let you have all you can carry for free.

You might need 4 screws if you're gonna drop the pc from an airplane.

2 screws do not remove a piviot point along a line between
them. If your hard drive had a bay where it had further
provisions like friction tabs, rails, etc, that might help.
Otherwise, fewer screws also means more of a chance for
vibration and less structural integrity of the case. Years
ago cases used to be averaging about 1mm thick sheeting,
then 0.8mm, and today it's quite common for them to even be
thinner.

Basically there's just no good reason not to use all the
screws if you have 'em lying around anyway. They aren't
hard to come by and it's kinda why the holes are there.

Actually there are enough holes for 8 screws, 4 on each side in some
cases. You gonna use them all? There is what's necessary and then there
is what's silly.

Depends on what part you're talking about. 4, even 3 screws
is much better than two for the reason I already stated,
that it removes the piviot point from having only two. If
you mean a hard drive, there is a difference between
choosing 8 vs 4 and choosing 4 vs 2. Obviously you don't
understand this, that the goal is not to use only the bare
minimum to keep the part dangling in roughly the right
place.

On a case, screwing in at least 4 on the side panels helps
a lot too.

Do you go around taking *extra* screws out of your car, TV,
refrigerator, etc? Makes no more sense to leave them out of
a computer than any other device. Actually, the screws in
all your other devices are quite a bit harder to come by in
many situations, while standard computer screws aren't.

If you call into your local computer shop you should be able to
purchase these screws or most likely they will give you 4 of the 2.6mm
diam screws for the cd-roms, I think they are 2.6mm and the hdd screws
are 3mm. I may be wrong and it might be 2mm fdd, cdrom etc and 2.6mm
for hdd.

They are standard not metric. Hard drives take 6-32, 1/4"
long or shorter. CD-Roms/DVD/floppy/etc take 4-40, also
typically 1/4" long or shorter.

Unless you're looking for something special like stainless
steel screws (not that they're really needed) you probably
don't need the sizes as most places selling a bag of the
right size specify them as (which type of) drive screws
instead of listing dimensions.

http://www.buyextras.com/screws.html

There are probably cheaper places, or as mentioned above a
computer shop tends to have plenty of extras and you could
probably talk them into giving you a few if you were buying
something (else), or maybe even if you weren't.
